Project Overview

FlashPlok!! is a simple, fun and addictive Flash puzzle game. It is coded in ActionScript 3 using the Flex 3 compiler and FlashDevelop IDE. It is built on top of FlashPunk, a library to facilitate the development of games that are targeting Flash Player 10. This was convenient because it provided a lot of groundwork code that I’d otherwise have to write (for about the 50th time!) such as object management and simple rendering code. The game is played by swapping blocks within columns to match either 4 blocks horizontally or 3 blocks vertically, at which point all the blocks on top of the line (and including the line) are destroyed giving points. The game is lost if the player lets the whole screen fill up and doesn’t clear the full columns within a set time. The difficulty increases as they gain points until it is eventually a frantic struggle to shift the blocks, pushing the player’s mental and physical reflexes to the limit.
I had a lot of fun making this game and I learned a lot about how to make a game addictive. I also learned a bunch about ActionScript 3 which was surprisingly a really enjoyable experience contrary to that of ActionScript 2 which I didn’t really enjoy all that much at all.

Work-In-Progress Preview Page – This is a work-in-progress preview page I made while in the middle of working on the project. I made it to show the game to a potential sponsor who was looking for touch screen games to put in pubs and bars. It shows some mid-development screenshots and explains some game mechanics.
