Project Overview

As a founding member of Shadowsoft Games, Terra Galactica (TG) was my first major game development project. The team for TG consisted of myself as lead programmer and co-director, John Faulkner as lead artist, level designer and co-director, Nik Thorpe as quality assurance tester and public relations supervisor and Nathan McLain (and Vodkatron Sound Team) as music and sound effects director.

TG was initially developed as a “summer project” in Game Maker, until I got into GBA development and we decided to make a serious attempt at getting a published title under our belts. We began the development process on the GBA, writing the game in C and compiling using homebrew development tools. We spent a serious amount of time developing TG, and it’s probably the project I’ve learned the most from out of any so far; both in terms of teamwork and of programming and general game development skills.

We got to the point of pitching out the game demo to publishers, and even came close to getting it published on the proviso that we port it to the DSĀ  – with this came the realisation that the GBA was a dying scene, and it was around this time we lost interest in the GBA version of the project. In the final version of the GBA game, we had 2 levels as well as title menus, game saving, ship customisation and most of the gameplay elements complete. Great care had to be taken to get the game running perfectly on the GBA hardware, and this was perhaps the greatest achievement of the project.

We still have plans for TG in the future, but the GBA version is done with. If and when we do continue the project, it will likely be on the PC or Xbox360 as an XNA project.

Downloads

Since the GBA version of TG has been officially discontinued, I’m in the process of discussing with the team the possibility of distributing the ROM here. I’ll update if and when it’s possible to provide a download for it, otherwise email me if you’re interested in seeing it as a portfolio piece.

The second released TG trailer. This reflects the more final version of the game, and shows off a bit more of the gameplay than the first trailer.

The first released TG trailer. This one is from an old version, and many additions have been made (most of them shown in trailer 2).
